Description   EN

Patuxent Research Refuge, National Wildlife Visitor Center

Trail Guide - Print before you and save the refuge the expense.

Open Daily 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Closed Federal Holidays
Trails & Grounds Open Sunrise to Sunset, Closed Federal Holidays

If you are here while the visitor center is open, you can also pick up a copy of their National Wildlife Visitor Center GPS Adventure packet.  I've based these virtuals on the 6 activities that are part of the GPS Adventure, so they will be visiting the same locations.  If you complete 3 of the 6 activities, you can return to the Visitor Center for a small prize.

Now for the cache, itself.  This will bring you to a small wild garden near the entrance to the Visitor Center that represents examples of multiple habitat types.  You may have the opportunity to observe butterfiles, frogs and toads.

Logging Requirements: Visit the site in person.  Find the informational sign that discusses the various habitats.  The Log Password will be the name of the plant that the Monarch Butterfly is shown on.  The information IS specified on the sign.

Please also post a photo of your visit to the garden.  It does not have to include your GPS or yourself unless you like.

Please Note: This cache has been placed with the cooperation of Amy Shoop of the Patuxent Research Refuge.  Please provide input on your experience with the cache and during your visit, in general, in your log.  For additional information about the refuge and activities there, you may contact [email protected].

1 29 August 2014 DisneyScout Found it

Needed a break from a stressful day, so I decided to check this series out. Volunteer at the front desk was more than helpful and I have all kinds of brochures and business cards to take back to my Cub Scout Den & Pack, Girl Scout Troop and Boy Scout Troop. There IS a reason I'm Disney Scout. ;-)

1 29 August 2014 sfcchaz Found it

I had some free time this afternoon and wanted to seek this new series for the current OCNA contest. I got the 5 that were published so far. I walked a total of 2.9 miles, but I did back track a couple times and also went into the Visitor Center.

This was the first one of the series today. Although this one shouldn't be difficult, I sure made it so. I spent a lot of time trying to locate the information sign. What a relief when I finally did. One of the previous signs I found I thought for sure would be the answer, but no butterfly. In the end I was correct about the password, just not from the correct sign. TFTC
