Description EN

A cache in the OpenCaching Cemetery Directory (OCD) Series. To add a cache to this series, simple follow this naming convention:

OCD State/Province - Cemetery Name (Township or Community Name)

Please provide some detail about the cemetery in your cache description, and please paste this note at the start of the description. Lets see how many states and provinces we can get to go OCD. Please respect any local laws regarding cache placement. If your state or local cemetery does not allow cemetery caches, then don't do it. Please be respectful anytime you are in a cemetery.

I will create and maintain a list of all the OCD caches, soon. For a list of all OCD caches, click HERE.

This one is located in the Stoney Creek Cemetery. The cemetery is real close to where the Battle of Stoney Creek was fought during the War of 1812. According to the City of Hamilton website, this cemetery was built in 1811 or possibly as early as 1807. There are around 1200 monuments in this cemetery, including a few important local and national people: William Gage (1744-1820; revolutionary war veteran), Janet Lee (1862-1940) Founder of the Canadian Women's Institute, Ernest D'Israeli Smith (1853-1948) Industrialist (E.D. Smith Company), Politician. There is a moment to Billy Green and to his brother-in-law Isaac Corman for their role in the Battle of Stoney Creek. Isaac is buried in this cemetery (not too far from the cache), but no one really knows where Billy is buried.

The cache is located in a bush beside the grave of Maggie Laura Randall Green who dies in 1907. There are 6 additional Green's named on the back of the stone - or is it the front?. If you are facing the side with Maggie's name, the cache will be on the bush to your right. About 4 feet off the ground.

If you're into letterboxing, I have two stamps planted in this cemetery - both honour War of 1812 "Messengers": Billy Green and Laura Secord (the latter stamp carved by the exceptionally talented Fiddleheads). You'll find that series listed on AltasQuest (you must be a member of AQ to see the listing)
