Description EN

While driving to Rice Lake I noticed this lone monument - I actually thought it might a lone grave site - and being curious and with time to spare I stopped and had a look.

To my surprise I discovered it was a monument honoring Joseph Scriven. The front of the monument reads:

13 MILES NORTH
PENGELLY'S CEMETERY
LIES THE PHILANTHROPIST
AND AUTHOR OF THE GREAT MASTERPIECE

WRITTEN AT PORT HOPE. 1857
WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
ALL OUR SINS AND GRIEFS TO BEAR
WHAT A PRIVILEGE TO CARRY
EVERYTHING TO GOD IN PRAYER
OH WHAT PEACE WE OFTEN FORFEIT
O WHAT NEEDLESS PAIN WE BEAR
ALL BECAUSE WE DO NOT CARRY
EVERYTHING TO GOD IN PRAYER

HAVE WE TRIALS AND TEMPTATIONS
IS THERE TROUBLE ANYWHERE
WE SHOULD NEVER BE DISCOURAGED
TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER
CAN WE FIND A FRIEND SO FAITHFUL
WHO WILL ALL OUR SORROWS SHARE
JESUS KNOWS OUR EVERY WEAKNESS
TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER

ARE WE WEAK AND HEAVY LADEN
CUMBERED WITH A LOAD OF CARE
PRECIOUS SAVIOR STILL OUR REFUGE
TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER
DO THEY FRIENDS DESPISE, FORSAKE THREE?
TAKE IT TO THE LORD IN PRAYER,
IN HIS ARMS HE'LL TAKE AND SHIELD THEE
THOU WILT FIND A SOLACE THERE.

I really enjoyed finding this monument because that hymn is one of my favourites.

To log this cache you will need to visit the monument and find a code word - it is on the side of the monument. There is an inscription on the south side of the monument - the second word is the log password, enter it exactly as it appears.
