The black granite monument honoring a local man who was killed in Iraq has been brought to its new home. On 27 August 2008, the J.C. Matteson monument was erected at its new home on the triangle between Forest Avenue and Busti-Stillwater Road - just in time to meet the Busti Hamlet Development Group's self-imposed deadline. The group had hoped to have the monument in place by Labor Day.
The monument was donated by the AMVETS post on Fluvanna Avenue after the post closed earlier this year. The monument was constructed in honor of Sgt. Matteson, a U.S. Army soldier from Southwestern Central School who was killed in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004.
I spotted this memorial on the way to the GeoWoodstock IX Pow Wow event. My uncle (ROOKIE49) and I stopped and noticed there was no cache (at the time) here. A GC.com cache was published this morning, which is part of a series in Busti. You may wish to check that out, as well.
