On July 8, 2010, a train hauling 19 cars full of grain derailed and
overturned just outside of downtown Waxhaw. No one was hurt - but Hwy
75, the main artery through Waxhaw, was completely shut down. The
Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Company, CSX, police, local government and
ordinary citizens worked together for days to clean up the mess and get
the road opened. That spirit of cooperation was captured and
commemorated in the artwork that stands before you, appropriately titled
"Getting Back on Track." Actual pieces from the wreck were used in its
construction.
To claim a find for this virtual cache, post a picture of yourself with
the artwork - bonus points if you can also catch a train going by (this
is a great spot for that, too).
