Patuxent Research Refuge's National Wildlife Visitor Center
Trail Guide - Print before you and save the refuge the expense.
Open Daily 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Closed Federal Holidays
Trails & Grounds Open Sunrise to Sunset, Closed Federal Holidays
If you are here while the visitor center is open, you can also pick up a copy of their National Wildlife Visitor Center GPS Adventure packet. I've based these virtuals on the 6 activities that are part of the GPS Adventure, so they will be visiting the same locations. If you complete 3 of the 6 activities, you can return to the Visitor Center for a small prize.
Now for the cache, itself. This will take you on walk past Goose Pond and into the woods.
Logging Requirements: Visit the site in person. At the 2nd trailhead, you'll find a plaque on a stone marker. The log password will A+B. A is the number of years of service mentioned on the plaque. At the listed coords, you'll find a informational sign about Habitat Fragmentation and Forest Birds. The birds discussed on this sign often have problems related to their eggs when living in small tracts. The bird species which is said to be responsible for the particular problem described here is the Xxxxxxxx-Xxxxxx _B_?
If years of service is 99 years and the referenced bird is the Flat-footed Jailbird, then the log password would be "99jailbird".
If you continue on a little deeper into the woods from here, you'll come to the namesake activity for the National Wildlife Visitor Center GPS Adventure.
Please Note: This cache was originally placed with the cooperation of Amy Shoop of the Patuxent Research Refuge. Please provide input on your experience with the cache and during your visit, in general, in your log. For additional information about the refuge and activities there, you may contact NWVC thru their Contact Page (South Tract).
